Caged breeding petition: Let’s Secure a Parliamentary debate!
Posted 21st February 2025
Thanks to your incredible support, the Government has officially responded to a petition calling for an end to the cruel caging of farmed animals, including breeding game birds. Over 40,000 people—thousands of them League supporters—stood up for these animals, demanding change.
But while the Government acknowledges our concerns, and confirmed in their response that they are considering the issue carefully, they have yet to commit to action. Until the law is strengthened, countless game birds will continue to suffer in cramped cages, all for the sake of so-called ‘sport.’ The current voluntary code of practice fails to provide meaningful protection, leaving these birds trapped in factory farming-style conditions.
The Shocking Reality of Caged Game Birds
Every year, tens of millions of pheasants and partridges are released into the British countryside, only to be shot for sport. To enable this, tens of thousands are confined in tiny cages for most of their lives. These birds endure immense suffering, experiencing stress-related injuries and, in some cases, death.
Imagine being crammed into a space the size of an A4 sheet of paper—this is the daily reality for many game birds. A pheasant in a cage receives just 0.0011% of the space it would enjoy in the wild, and for a partridge, it’s even worse: 0.00004%.
The Next Step: A Parliamentary Debate
Now, we need to take this campaign further. If we reach 100,000 signatures, we can secure a parliamentary debate on this urgent issue. This is our chance to put real pressure on the Government and expose the cruelty of caging game birds.
Thousands of you have already raised your voices—but we must keep going! If you haven’t yet signed the petition, please sign it today. If you have, share it with friends, family, and anyone who cares about ending animal cruelty.
Together, we can make history. Let’s hit 100,000 signatures to help bring an end to this outdated and inhumane practice. Sign and share the petition today:
